The art of...

When it comes to certain things, I'm a rather obsessive person. This seems to hold especially true when it comes to art. For the longest time I dealt solely with oil paints (though whether this was due to my obsessive nature or my mother's, I'm not entirely certain). Then pastels (they were quick and easy to work with, albeit rather messy), then print-making (you know, that period when I kept accidentally stabbing myself with my linoleum-carving tools), and who can forget my crocheting spell? Plus, I still have a few thousand paper stars lying around my room I'm not quite sure what to do with. Now, it's...

wire.

That's right, wire. Who knew something so commonplace could be so fun to work with? It started out with making people's names, then moved on to flowers, and with my mother's birthday coming up next week, I figured I'd make her a card. What better medium to employ than wire?

Then I realized how ridiculous it would be to make a card solely out of wire, so I combined my new skill of making words using wire (derived from much practice making people's names) with an old hobby of creating homemade cards.

I remember when I was younger and had far more time on my hands, I would make cards for every occasion: birthdays, holidays, just for fun. I also remember always wishing I had better materials to work with. In those days, I didn't even get construction paper; the many cards I made were constructed solely out of white printer paper and colored pencils. But I'm in Studio Art, where there's an abundance of all sorts of fun materials: felt, cardboard, yarn, wire, sheets of metal, wallpaper samples... say hello to my new obsession?

On a completely different note, I'm trying to convince my father to let me get a job playing piano at a restaurant/hotel-type setting this summer. Both Crossno and Layne have mentioned possible venues. Wish me luck...

ooh that would be an awesome job, we could work at the same hotel you playing music, me making drinks. We could even start hustling. I love making homemade cards, I always try and make them look as much like real ones as possible by drawing barcodes and "Chrismark" on the backs. You're wire obsession is quite cool, I think everyone enjoys it.
